Lessons from Geese: What a three-minute video taught me about leadership
September 8, 2026More than 220 people trained. Countless “a ha!” moments. And a new shared language around performance. That’s the impact Cube Learning and Development has had on medical equipment specialists B. Braun through a bespoke and targeted Passport to Leadership programme.
Co-created with B. Braun’s learning and development team in 2019 and updated by Cube and the in-house teams, the Passport to Leadership programme has moved from optional through compulsory to now highly desirable new manager training.
With nine modules delivered monthly over a year, cohorts form strong bonds to create excellent peer networks, supported by mentors from within B. Braun. The content was jointly created and is now delivered through a mixture of Cube and in-house facilitators, some online and some in person. The final 360 feedback day is delivered by Cube to ensure delegates understand exactly what it is, and the benefits 360 feedback can create.
- Braun’s learning and development manager Sam Fairbanks said: “Cube’s impact on our Passport to Leadership programme has been incredible. From bringing diverse perspectives and best practice from other sectors, to delivering supportive challenge to help delegates shift their thinking, we couldn’t ask for more.
“Cube are real partners in the delivery of this programme. The fact it has shifted from an optional new manager course to something that’s seen as highly desirable and regularly requested by people on our talent pipeline is testament to its high quality.
“The programme’s impact is a shared language and cultural shift, which has helped us better manage performance and give our first-line management population more confidence in tackling things like giving quality feedback and having difficult conversations.
“When Cube are delivering, I never worry. I know the day will run brilliantly, questions and group dynamics will be handled with care, and people who are at first hesitant about the programme will end up as cheerleaders!”
Now on cohort 19 and with dedicated delivery to reflect the challenges of the operational arm of the business starting in Q4 of 2025, the Passport to Leadership programme is embedded in the way B. Braun invests in its people.
In addition to delivering this leadership development programme since 2019, the Cube team has also worked on developing B. Braun’s internal mentoring capacity, using the Passport to Leadership as a springboard. There’s now a pool of volunteers throughout the organisation willing to act as mentors on a range of issues that could affect people at work – from the usual management conundrums to being a parent of multiples, managing grief and neurodivergence. Cube designed and delivered a mentoring workshop, helping people understand the role and develop skills to provide support to colleagues.
With 224 people (and counting) going through the Passport to Leadership programme, and many graduates moving up through B. Braun’s management structure, it’s no wonder the programme has influenced culture. It has created a common language and foundational knowledge which drives consistency in the way people are managed, aligning to B. Braun’s values. This means new leaders are more confident in the way they manage their teams, better equipped to handle tough conversations, and contribute to improving productivity by properly managing performance.
We’ll leave the final word to the client.
Sam said: “We’ve continued to work with Cube since 2019 because they are curious – asking the right questions to understand exactly what we’re trying to achieve. They are challenging – questioning any received wisdom to make sure we’re getting the right outcomes and never just agreeing with us for the sake of keeping the work. And they have invested in getting to know B. Braun, so integrate our strategic vision and key messages whenever they are with our people.”
