Mindful leadership: Boost team wellbeing & performance
November 12, 2024Business growth. A consistency of language and culture. Headspace for the CEO. All things that Cube’s training and development work have contributed to for ESP Play and QUEST Electrical.
The Cube team has delivered training for people at all stages in their career, across these co-owned organisations, with three bespoke courses for:
– Senior leaders
– Emerging and existing middle managers
– People early in their careers
With a highly-skilled operational workforce, CEO Andrew Wood wanted to provide a platform where employees could build essential business skills. With these tailored courses covering leadership, performance management, resilience, conflict resolution, productivity, presenting and much more, employees are better equipped to take the next step in their career.
Andrew made a personal commitment to the training, opening the first course himself to show people how important he felt the development opportunity was. He’s also happy to be helping his people develop, even if they move on to other organisations, believing that to be part of an employer’s responsibility.
Now firmly established as part of ESP/QUEST’s ongoing employee development commitment, Cube director Chris Burton continually works to adapt content in-line with business changes and need. Over the past four years, in addition to upskilling operational staff into effective leaders and managers, the courses have also impacted on productivity and created a strong peer network within the organisations.
Reflecting on how the courses have been part of their upward trajectory, Andrew says: “Our growth’s been phenomenal and I honestly think the courses give people a lot more confidence in situations, whether it’s a negotiation, dealing with conflicts, or a difficult conversation.”
With a course module focused specifically on ‘courageous conversations’, the results are clear to Andrew: “The team can go into those conversations knowing that they’ve had some kind of practise, so they deal with it with confidence. They’re in control of situations. This has been a huge part of our growth. It’s provided improvements in people’s capability, which enables them to perform better in any situation.”
Now seen as a valued part of the team, Chris and Cube’s input has grown to include individual coaching and one-to-one sessions. “As a result, people see him as someone they can reach out to and get advice and second opinions from when it comes to things like appraisals and performance reviews. He’s very calming in his approach and very engaging, so is easy to open up to. We’ve got certain people in the room that are fearful of speaking in groups and struggle with their confidence and Chris makes them feel at ease to engage and comment,” adds Andrew.
With the quality of the content and the benefit of an outsider’s feedback on employee contribution and engagement, Andrew credits these ever-evolving and truly tailored courses with: “…creating consistent culture, improving people’s confidence and improving customer impressions. They’ve also freed up my time to go and invest in new things that enable the whole business to grow.”
